CANTERBURY COUNCIL - A Case Study

TESTIMONIAL:  “The whole project came in on budget and within the required time frame.  The results were so good that I will be utilizing Peter Quessy and his staff for future field renovations.”  Supervisor – Parks and Property – City of Canterbury

The area where Ewen Park is located lies on the southernmost boundaries of two properties originally granted by the government to two early settlers of the district around 1803.  The Park provides outstanding facilities for the sporting enthusiast and the general public.  It is located at Hurlstone Park on the banks of the Cooks River.

Green Horticultural Group were successful in securing the works to undertake a sportsfield renovation to 2 sportsfields at Ewen Park.   Following a wet winter, the 2 football fields were in disrepair and required rejuvenation to bring the fields up to standard for the cricket season ahead.

To achieve the correct depth of aeration, it was necessary to undertake both Earthquaking and Vertidraining.  Renovations began with the Earthquake Aerator with Super Quake blades, which aerated the heavily compacted soil to the required depth of 150mm. Once completed, the area was then further aerated with 32mm hollow tynes on our Vertidrain. Due to using the Earthquake first, the Vertidrain was able to aerate the surface to a depth of over 200mm, ensuring that amelioration, water and fertilising penetrated well into the soil profile.

With the surface well aerated, 120 tonnes of a washed sand topdressing mix incorporated with 1.5 tonnes of gypsum was spread over the playing area.  This was then rubbed in and levelled off, filling the core holes to assist in long term performance of the renovation.

A light application of complete turf fertiliser was then applied, and the entire area was watered to ensure optimum effect.  This cost effective and efficient sportsfield renovation was the perfect way to bring Ewen Park out of a cold and wet winter, and be rejuvenated and ready for the summer sports season.

Green Horticultural Group would like to thank Canterbury Council for the opportunity to apply our Sportsfield Renovation Solution to their high profile, popular, and multi use sports area
